After
leaving my family, friends, career, and home back in the states to embark on a
new journey in Africa, people were constantly encouraging me to keep a journal
or start a blog to remember every second of my truly unique experience. So here
it goes.
LIFE.
What exactly does this little word mean? Every dictionary has a different
definition of life and every person a different version. My life in Kansas was perfect, or so I thought. I loved my job
as a pediatric nurse. I was doing extremely well in my pursuit of a doctoral
degree in nursing at Creighton University. My family lived close by, making
frequent visits possible. Not to mention, I had an amazing group of friends.
But despite all of these highs in my life, one thing was missing, and I didn’t
even realize it until he walked into my life by chance. ADAM. Adam was missing
from my life.
I
met Adam through a group of mutual friends. I was instantly fascinated with his
very different version of life. He left Wichita to help his father and uncle
run a family business in Luanda, Angola. He quickly learned Portuguese and
adjusted to life in a third world country. The stories he told me were
something I could not even imagine considering I had spent the last 25 years of
my life living in the middle of a first world country. After hearing all about
Adam’s experiences in Luanda and getting to know him a little better, I knew
that there was more to my life than what I had been living. Adam and I started
dating in January of 2012. By May of 2013, we were married! I guess the saying
is true: when you know, you know.
My
life truly began on May 25, 2013, the day I married my best friend. I quit my
job, applied and received a visa for Angola, packed up my belongings, and flew
halfway around the world to a third world country to find out how much more of
my life was waiting for me, and us. And so our journey began.
